Heritage Icon Award

The National Trust of Australia in Tasmania is giving the public the chance to say what they regard as their favourite Tasmanian icon.

In partnership with Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees, the Trust is inviting nominations for the inaugural Tasmanian Heritage Icons Awards, with nominations closing on October 24 and the winning 10 icons to be announced on October 31. The nomination form can be downloaded from the website nationaltrusttas.org.au/icons.htm or you can get the form from visiting National Trust properties or Tasmanian Perpetual Trustees branches.

Holy Trinity Church is certain to feature in the nominations considering the overwhelming backing the public has given to the Holy Trinity Support Group's campaign to see the church saved and restored.

There is also the fact that the National Trust itself has rated the church among the top 10 most-at-risk heritage buildings in Australia.

Hobart Lord Mayor Rob Valentine, who showed his support for the Holy Trinity cause at the Hobart City Council's August meeting, has weighed in with further personal backing.

When the Mercury sought comment from various personalities on what they rated as their icons, Mayor Valentine was quick to respond with Holy Trinity - "we have such a collection of colonial heritage, such as Holy Trinity Church".

The awards also include a Children's Choice section (for children 17 or younger) and the organisers are encouraging children to send in artwork to accompany their nomination (there will be a selection of works for exhibition).

Given that Holy Trinity has long been a favourite subject of artists, there's plenty of scope for the younger generation to paint or sketch how they see our great heritage church.
